BGH – DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY AND COMMUNITY MEDICINE NOW RECOGNIZED AS A NEW FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAM BY THE PHILIPPINE ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS

By Dr. Noel M. Laxamana, Training Officer, Department of Family & Community Medicine

The hospital’s Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) has successfully hurdled the rigorous FM residency training accreditation process by the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP). The accreditation team visited the hospital on October 19, 2016 and was composed of Dr. Josefina S. Isidro-Lapeña, Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine of the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital, and Dr. Gary D. Galon, Training Officer of the Department of Family Medicine of Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City. The accreditation team made use of the PAFP standard tool for accreditation and had looked upon the faculty credentials, learning facilities, program development, teaching strategies and venues for evaluation. The accreditation team recognized the completeness of the documents presented and had largely praised the substantial contribution of the hospital’s ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems.

Prior to the accreditation, the department was formally institutionalized and has been providing health services to the following areas:

• Emergency Department
• Employees’ Clinic (Family Health Care Program & Occupational Medicine)
• Bataan HAVEN (HIV/AIDS Treatment Hub)
• Medical Outpatient Clinic
• Barangay Cabog-Cabog (Community Oriented Primary Care)

With the training program in place, Family Medicine residents shall be allowed to rotate and deliver services to the In-patient wards, Outpatient Department, Smoking Cessation and Counseling Clinic, TB-DOTS Clinic and Animal Bite Treatment Center. Further, they shall also be involved in the care and management of Toxicology/Poisoning Cases and receive referrals for Hospice and Palliative Care.

The department is currently headed by Dr. Tyrel Tolentino. On the other hand, Dr. Noel Laxamana serves as the Training Officer. The FM Consultant Staff comprises of Dr. Vigil Natividad, Dr. Ericson Lloyd Patio, Dr. Isagani Yabut and Dr. Anabella Robles. Recently, two more FM specialists have joined the team, namely, Dr. Warren Alngag and Dr. Abigael Andal. At present, the program has two First Year Trainees, namely, Dr. Jorose Cortel-Quindoy and Dr. Aristotle Acuña.

The program offers a Four-Year Innovative/Practice-Based Program, wherein the program aims for specialization in Family Medicine while in the community or unit of practice. This is the hospital’s response to the Department of Health’s need in training more Primary Care Physicians to achieve Universal Health Care or Kalusugan Pangkalahatan.

The department shall have its formal conferment as a New Family Medicine Residency Training Program of the DOH, at the PAFP Anniversary and Annual Convention on March 2-4, 2017 at the Philippine International Convention Center.
