The Bataan General Hospital joins the international community in the celebration of World No Tobacco Day under the theme "Get Ready for Plain Packaging". According to World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), plain packaging otherwise known as standardized packaging refers to "measures to restrict or prohibit the use of logos, colors, brand images or promotional information on packaging other than brand names and product names displayed in a standard color and font style.
Moreover, all tobacco products manufactured or imported for sale in the Philippines are required to carry the new Graphic Health Warnings as per GHW Law Implementing Rules and Regulations which started last March 3, 2016. It is expected that all tobacco products shall carry graphic health warnings by November 04, 2016 wherein non-compliant packages shall be subjected to removal or confiscation.
The event was begun with a simple program wherein Mr. Romeo Tuazon Jr, HEPO and Tobacco Control Coordinator of BGH, emphasized the significance of the hospital's advocacy in maintaining a 100% smoke-free environment and workplace. He also encouraged the employees to participate in the implementation of No Smoking policy in the hospital which is initiated by its Medical Center Chief, Dr. Glory V. Baltazar, by disseminating information in order to increase the awareness and knowledge of the public on the ill effects of smoking. The highlight of the said program was the destruction of all confiscated cigarettes from the patients' watchers and visitors in the hospital.
BGH is a recipient of the Department of Health's Red Orchid Award Hall of Fame for its implementation of a 100% Tobacco-Free Environment. The said award is judged using the WHO's MPOWER initiative wherein BGH garnered a total score of 108.70% which is higher than the set score of 95-100%.
